University of Buenos Aires to award Messi honorary doctorate

The University of Buenos Aires is set to confer an honorary doctorate on Argentina captain Lionel Messi in recognition of his football career and contribution to the country.

The university’s Higher Council unanimously approved the honour, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

Messi is expected to receive the distinction on Tuesday, October 6, ahead of Argentina’s farewell match against Benin at the Monumental Stadium.

The university described the doctorate as its highest honorary distinction and said it recognises Messi’s excellence, perseverance, humility and ethical conduct.

It also highlighted his role in Argentina’s major international triumphs, including the 2021 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima, 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa América.

The institution further referenced Argentina’s runners-up finish at the 2026 World Cup.

University Rector Ricardo Gelpi said the honour goes beyond Messi’s football statistics and achievements.

“Beyond what all Argentinians know about Messi, regardless of the numbers and statistics that attest to his status as an athlete, we also want to recognise a humble, persevering person, an example and ambassador of our popular culture and national identity,” Gelpi said.

He added that the award also acknowledges Messi’s broader influence and his role in representing Argentina through sport and beyond.
