Tuggar Urges NRMG to Champion Nigeria’s Global Image Amid Rising Disinformation

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has highlighted the vital role of strategic public relations in safeguarding and advancing Nigeria’s international image, especially in a global climate increasingly shaped by disinformation and skewed narratives.

Speaking at the opening of the Nigeria Reputation Management Group (NRMG) retreat in Abuja, Tuggar—represented by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir—described the NRMG as “custodians of Nigeria’s image.”

He charged them with the responsibility of crafting a national narrative rooted in unity, resilience, and trust.

“In this era of misinformation, the importance of credible storytelling and reputation management cannot be overstated,” Abdulkadir said on the minister’s behalf. “NRMG must lead Nigeria’s image-building efforts with integrity, purpose, and a deep understanding of global perceptions.”

Also speaking at the event, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service and NRMG Vice Chair, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the link between a nation’s image and its diplomatic and economic leverage.

“A strong, consistent national reputation enhances credibility and opens doors for meaningful engagement on the global stage,” he said.

Echoing this sentiment, Chairman of Channels Media Group and Chair of the NRMG Board, John Momoh, pointed to the recent victory of the Super Falcons at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as a powerful example of how national achievements shape international perception.

“Our image is not just shaped by what we say—it’s also about what we do. The Super Falcons’ triumph is a reflection of Nigerian excellence, determination, and pride. These are the values that must drive our reputation globally,” Momoh said.

The retreat convened government communicators, media leaders, and strategic stakeholders to chart a comprehensive roadmap for media diplomacy, reputation building, and public trust.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to reposition Nigeria as a leading voice in governance, innovation, and cultural diplomacy.

Abdulkadir concluded by urging the group to approach their task with “clarity, credibility, and conviction,” reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to a proactive and strategic image campaign.
