The United States is intensifying its trade confrontation with Canada, announcing plans to block the importation of certain Canadian dairy products, alcoholic beverages and motorcycles from September 29.
The measures, approved by President Donald Trump, represent a fresh escalation in the increasingly bitter trade dispute between the two North American neighbours. Washington says the restrictions are aimed at what it considers discriminatory Canadian trade policies affecting American goods.
The latest action follows retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada on about 20 billion dollars worth of American goods. Ottawa introduced the measures after the United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on a range of Canadian products, further straining economic relations between the two countries.
Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc has maintained that the government’s priority is protecting Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses while continuing to look for a negotiated solution.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has also pushed for Canada to reduce its economic dependence on the United States by expanding trade with other international partners.
The escalation comes after bilateral trade negotiations broke down in August, raising fresh concerns over the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which has underpinned economic ties between the three countries for years.
Although the products targeted by the new restrictions represent a relatively small share of overall Canadian exports to the United States, the measures could have a significant impact on affected industries.
