Trump Moves to Unseal Epstein Testimony Amid Backlash from MAGA Base

U.S.  President Donald Trump has ordered the Justice Department to pursue the release of sealed grand jury testimony related to the prosecution of the late financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, in a bid to quell a growing storm of backlash within his own political base.

The move comes after a bombshell report by The Wall Street Journal reignited controversy around Trump’s past association with Epstein. The newspaper claimed that in 2003, Trump penned a suggestive letter to Epstein referencing a “shared secret,” a revelation that has provoked anger among Trump’s staunchest MAGA (Make America Great Again) supporters—many of whom long suspected a broader conspiracy behind Epstein’s alleged crimes and death.

In a fiery post on his Truth Social platform, Trump lashed out at The Wall Street Journal and its owner Rupert Murdoch, threatening legal action.

“I look forward to getting Rupert Murdoch to testify in my lawsuit against him and his ‘pile of garbage’ newspaper, the WSJ,” Trump wrote. “That will be an interesting experience!!!”

Attorney General Pam Bondi, who assumed the role under Trump’s second term, announced Friday that the Justice Department would petition the court to unseal portions of the grand jury testimony from the Epstein case.

While such proceedings are typically kept under strict seal to protect witness privacy and legal integrity, Bondi signaled that public pressure—particularly from the president’s supporters—had prompted a reassessment.

“The American people deserve transparency,” Bondi said. “We are reviewing legal options to responsibly release this material.”

However, legal experts caution that unsealing grand jury testimony is rare and difficult to obtain without clear public interest or prosecutorial necessity. It also remains unclear whether any unsealed records would contain explosive revelations, such as the long-rumored “Epstein client list” that conspiracy theorists claim includes powerful global figures.

Trump’s renewed entanglement with the Epstein saga has triggered an unusual backlash from within his own base—many of whom saw Trump as a crusader against elite corruption and a potential exposer of the alleged pedophile network surrounding Epstein.

Adding fuel to the fire, Bondi issued a memo earlier in July stating that no official “client list” exists, a claim that many MAGA supporters have refused to accept.

The fallout represents a rare loss of narrative control for Trump, whose command over the Republican political machine and media ecosystem has largely gone unchallenged—until now.

“If Trump doesn’t release the truth about Epstein, he’s part of the cover-up,” one prominent MAGA influencer posted on X (formerly Twitter), reflecting the sentiment among disillusioned loyalists.

Epstein, a multimillionaire with ties to politicians, celebrities, and royalty, was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges when he was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell in 2019.

His death was officially ruled a suicide, but it fueled widespread conspiracy theories—especially among right-wing circles—about an international elite child abuse ring and a cover-up orchestrated to protect powerful individuals.

Trump, who has alternated between distancing himself from Epstein and acknowledging their social relationship, is now at the center of renewed scrutiny as the public seeks accountability and transparency.
