Troy Deeney: Liam Delap Is Skipping Crucial Development Step by Choosing Chelsea Over Man United

Watford legend Troy Deeney has voiced concerns over Liam Delap’s decision to join Chelsea, suggesting the young forward is bypassing a key stage in his development by not choosing Manchester United instead.

Chelsea are reportedly on the verge of finalizing the signing of the 22-year-old striker from Ipswich Town, having won the race for his signature this summer. Delap has already completed the first phase of his medical with the club.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Deeney reflected on the move, saying he believed United would have been a more suitable next step in Delap’s career trajectory.

“I think, personally, when I just look at Delap’s development, I thought Manchester United was a perfect fit [for him to join the club],” Deeney said. “I think he’s missing a step in his development [by choosing Chelsea].”

Deeney also noted Delap’s limited Premier League experience, especially following Ipswich Town’s recent relegation.

“The second Ipswich Town got relegated, he did not play [for them in the Premier League],” Deeney pointed out. “Going to Manchester United at this stage of his career, he would’ve had to deal with the big experience.”

Delap’s move to Chelsea signals another high-profile acquisition by the London club, but Deeney’s remarks raise questions about whether the step up comes too soon for the young forward.
