President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Sunday, honored the memory of the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as a spiritual pillar and moral guide whose support played a defining role in his emergence as Nigeria’s president in 2023.
Speaking during the 8th-day Fidau prayers held at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Tinubu reflected on the life and legacy of the late monarch, praising his unwavering commitment to justice, integrity, and the advancement of Yorubaland and Nigeria.
“He was a steadfast leader, a man of deep wisdom and courage. When I visited him before the 2023 election, he gave me his blessing and assured me of victory. That encouragement meant the world to me,” the President said, adding that the monarch’s influence would be felt for generations to come.
According to Tinubu, Oba Adetona was more than a traditional ruler he was a statesman and a guardian of Nigeria’s democratic journey. The President recalled the Awujale’s vocal advocacy during the struggle to reverse the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola.
“Baba stood firm during one of the darkest periods in our democratic history. His voice was clear, his values unshaken. He served as a beacon for those of us who believed in a free and just Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
The President called on all Nigerians, especially sons and daughters of Ijebuland, to preserve and promote the cultural heritage and principles that the late monarch embodied. “It’s now up to us to carry forward the values he lived by honor, service, and unity,” he stated.
He also extended appreciation to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his dedicated care and support for the late monarch, whom Tinubu described as a leader of conscience and tradition.
In his remarks, Governor Abiodun hailed the late Oba as an extraordinary figure in Nigerian traditional leadership. He said the monarch redefined the role of the throne, using it as a platform to foster peace, progress, and purposeful dialogue.
“Oba Adetona was more than a king. He was a rare blend of intellectual brilliance and moral integrity,” Abiodun said. “He guided Ijebuland through decades of transformation, preserving our culture while embracing modern ideals.”
The solemn event attracted a wide array of dignitaries, including current and former state governors, federal lawmakers, members of the Federal Executive Council, religious leaders, royal fathers, and prominent figures from the business community, all gathered to pay their respects to a monarch whose impact transcended borders.
Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for over 60 years, is remembered as one of Nigeria’s most influential and revered traditional rulers a custodian of culture, a champion of justice, and a symbol of enduring leadership.
