Tinubu Commits to Revamping Conflict-Prone Areas, Praises Military Sacrifice

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to convert Nigeria’s formerly unstable and conflict-prone areas into vibrant centres of economic activity.

He made the pledge on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while launching the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Appeal Emblem.

Highlighting the progress recorded under his security reforms, President Tinubu noted significant breakthroughs, including the mass surrender of insurgents, the neutralisation of key terrorist commanders, improved joint military operations, and strengthened maritime security.

The President revealed that the Ministry of Defence is developing a strategic programme aimed at reclaiming ungoverned spaces across the country.

The initiative will leverage the expertise of retired military personnel to secure vulnerable communities, restore government authority, and ultimately transform troubled zones into productive economic hubs.

Reaffirming his commitment to the welfare of security personnel, President Tinubu outlined ongoing efforts to upgrade military barracks, enhance troop allowances, expand healthcare services, and improve pension verification systems for retired service members.

He applauded the bravery of Nigeria’s armed forces in confronting terrorism, insurgency, banditry, oil theft, piracy, and other threats, noting that their sacrifices have brought renewed stability to many communities.

President Tinubu emphasized the enduring importance of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day—observed annually on January 15—describing it as a solemn moment for the nation to honour those who paid the ultimate price in defence of peace, unity, and sovereignty.

He stressed that supporting the families of fallen heroes and caring for those still in service remains a “sacred duty.”

“As a grateful nation, we must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answer the call to serve,” he said.

The President announced a ₦200 million donation toward the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Appeal.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, after being decorated with the emblem by the National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Grace Morenike Henry, followed with a ₦100 million contribution.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, also donated ₦20 million—bringing the total pledged at the event to ₦320 million.

President Tinubu further unveiled the “Thank a Soldier” QR code platform, a digital innovation that allows Nigerians at home and abroad to send direct messages of appreciation to the nation’s troops.

He described the platform as an initiative designed to promote national engagement and encourage youth involvement in national service.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to shun divisive rhetoric and embrace tolerance, unity, and mutual respect, describing the country’s diversity as a vital national asset that must be protected.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, several ministers, and heads of security agencies.
