President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming the Nigeria Police Force into a modern, professional, and accountable institution.
Speaking at the second edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendation Ceremony in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, emphasized the importance of investing in tools, training, and welfare initiatives to boost police professionalism and morale.
Tinubu highlighted the need for continuous training, acquisition of modern equipment, and robust community engagement to meet the demands of contemporary policing. He stated, “Our idea of a modern police force goes beyond superficial changes… True reform of our security doctrine and its architecture necessitates recognising the importance of administering justice and adhering to our ethical values to foster stability and order in the nation.”
In his remarks, Akpabio announced a personal donation of ₦5 million to the family of the late Assistant Commissioner of Police, Aniedi Cecilia Udoh, who was posthumously honored with the 2024 Community Policing Advocate of the Year award.
He also recalled his support for the police during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, including the provision of patrol vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, and the establishment of police infrastructure.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, affirmed that the transformation of the Police Force is a continuous commitment, emphasizing the importance of accountability and responsibility within law enforcement. He stated, “This is not just about awards; it’s about legacy. Policing is not a transactional duty—it is a transformational mission.”
The event also saw the declaration of April 7 as National Police Day and the first week of April as Police Week, aimed at honoring the contributions of the Nigeria Police Force to national security.
These initiatives underscore the government’s dedication to enhancing the operational efficiency and welfare of the Nigeria Police Force, fostering a safer and more secure nation.
