Three Katsina PDP Lawmakers Defect to APC, Citing Party Crisis and Instability

Reps say internal conflict in PDP hindered effective representation; Governor Radda present at formal defection

Three members of the House of Representatives from Katsina State have formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing deep-seated internal crises and instability within their former party.

Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, made the announcement on Thursday during plenary, after reading a letter submitted by the defecting lawmakers. The letter outlined their reasons for leaving the PDP, emphasizing ongoing factionalism and unresolved disputes that have, according to them, obstructed their ability to serve their constituents effectively.

“The persistent internal wrangling within the PDP has made it increasingly difficult to operate in line with the aspirations of our people and the principles of progressive governance,” the lawmakers stated in their joint letter.

Their defection marks another high-profile shift in the political landscape of Katsina State, consolidating the APC’s influence ahead of upcoming political cycles.

In a notable display of support, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State was present in the chamber to witness the formal switch. His presence was widely seen as a symbolic endorsement of the lawmakers’ decision and a strategic alignment within the state’s political structure.

While the PDP has yet to issue a formal response, the latest defections add to growing concerns about the party’s internal cohesion and its ability to retain elected officials at both state and national levels.

The names of the defecting lawmakers were not immediately disclosed in the plenary session, but sources within the House confirmed that they represent key federal constituencies in the state.
