“Terry G Fires Back at Portable Comparisons: ‘Put Some Respect on My Name'”

Street-hop pioneer Terry G has expressed his displeasure over ongoing comparisons between him and controversial artist Portable.
Taking to his X account on April 14, 2025, Terry G made it clear that he finds the comparison disrespectful, pointing out that his songs have stood the test of time, with many still resonating with listeners over a decade after their release.
Fans have frequently drawn parallels between the two artists, particularly due to their bold fashion choices, unconventional music styles, and eccentric personalities. However, Terry G seems to believe that those similarities don’t warrant the direct comparison.
Since making his mainstream debut in 2021, Portable has become one of Nigeria’s most talked-about artists—not just for his music, but for his headline-grabbing controversies. In contrast, while Terry G’s era was also marked by a rebellious streak—through his “Free Madness” movement, quirky dance steps, and genre-blending tracks—he avoided run-ins with law enforcement.
Often described as the “Akpako Master,” Terry G fused Galala, White Garment influences, and hip-hop elements to create a sound that was uniquely his. This blend is partly why fans have seen shades of Terry G in Portable’s style.
Interestingly, Terry G once acknowledged the similarity himself during an episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, admitting that he sees a version of himself in Portable. The two have even collaborated before—Terry G appeared on Portable’s track “Ogbafia,” and both featured on C Prince’s “Koba.”
However, it’s unlikely Portable will respond to Terry G’s recent comments anytime soon, as he is currently being held in a correctional facility in Kwara State following criminal defamation charges filed by Fuji music legend, King Saheed Osupa.
