Ten-Man Villa Hold Newcastle to Stalemate in Premier League Opener

Aston Villa fought valiantly to secure a goalless draw against Newcastle United on the opening day of the 2025/26 Premier League season, surviving with ten men after Ezri Konsa’s red card midway through the second half at Villa Park.
The turning point came in the 66th minute when Konsa was dismissed for pulling down Anthony Gordon, who had broken clear on goal. The red card left Villa with their backs against the wall, but Unai Emery’s side displayed grit and organisation to deny the visitors a breakthrough in a scrappy yet fiercely contested encounter.
Newcastle had the upper hand for much of the first half, generating numerous chances that could have put them ahead. Within minutes of kick-off, Anthony Elanga — making his competitive debut for the Magpies — burst through one-on-one, only to be denied by Villa’s debutant goalkeeper Marco Bizot, who filled in for the suspended Emiliano Martínez.
Harvey Barnes was a constant threat down the left, delivering pinpoint crosses. His first found Gordon in space, but the winger headed over from close range. Soon after, Barnes located Elanga at the far post, though the latter’s volley flew wide. Gordon nearly scored just before halftime with a deflected shot that Bizot pushed around the post.
Villa struggled for rhythm in the first half but showed more urgency after the interval. Boubacar Kamara’s powerful header forced a solid save from Nick Pope, and Ollie Watkins also tested the Newcastle goalkeeper after a clever run and pass from Morgan Rogers.
Just as Villa began to gain momentum, the match swung in Newcastle’s favour. Elanga’s incisive through ball released Gordon, only for Konsa to drag him down as the last defender — leaving referee Craig Pawson with no option but to brandish a red card.
The numerical advantage saw Eddie Howe’s side push forward aggressively. Barnes unleashed a thunderous volley that was bravely blocked by Matty Cash, and a late barrage of pressure had Villa pinned deep in their own half.
Despite the onslaught, the hosts remained disciplined and compact, repelling Newcastle’s advances and grinding out a hard-earned point.
While Villa will take pride in their defensive resilience, Newcastle will rue their missed opportunities as their campaign begins with a frustrating draw.
