Super Falcons Will Receive Allowances Before WAFCON Final – Sports Commission Chair

Shehu Dikko assures timely disbursement of bonuses as Nigeria eyes a historic 10th WAFCON title

As anticipation builds for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has addressed mounting concerns over delayed bonus payments to the Super Falcons.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, Dikko clarified that the delay in disbursing players’ allowances was not intentional. He explained that the holdup stemmed from routine government financial procedures.

“This money is never delayed deliberately. It is because of the processes for the government,” Dikko said.

He assured Nigerians that all approved bonuses, including payments for the upcoming final against Morocco, had been cleared by President Bola Tinubu and released by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). According to him, directives have been issued to ensure the players receive their allowances by the close of business today.

Dikko emphasized that the Super Falcons have always been included in the national sports budget and noted the administration’s commitment to gender equity in sports funding.

“At least, the females are getting the decent bonuses they deserve,” he said, pointing out that the women’s team has made significant progress in terms of financial support compared to previous years.

The Sports Commission chairman also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the team’s welfare, urging the public to recognize the complexities involved in disbursing public funds within the bureaucratic system.

Looking ahead to the final clash, Dikko expressed confidence in the Falcons’ ability to secure a historic 10th WAFCON title. He referenced the team’s campaign theme, Mission X, which symbolizes their ambition to dominate the continent once again.

He lauded the players for their mental strength and ability to remain focused despite external distractions.

“Focus is to get the cup tomorrow,” Dikko said, commending the unity and determination within the squad.

The Super Falcons, who have won the WAFCON title nine times, will face hosts Morocco on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. The match is seen not only as a sporting milestone but also a moment of national pride, as prominent figures including First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu have sent motivational messages to rally the team.

With national support swelling and financial issues nearing resolution, all eyes are now on the pitch as Nigeria chases a record-breaking triumph in women’s football.
