Spain Face Belgium Test With France Clash In Sight

Spain are one step away from a blockbuster World Cup semi-final against France as they prepare to face Belgium in the quarter-finals at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The European champions enter the tie with the tournament’s strongest defensive record, having yet to concede a goal. A victory over Belgium would send Luis de la Fuente’s side to Texas for a highly anticipated clash with Kylian Mbappe’s France.

Belgium, however, have grown stronger throughout the competition after a slow start. Their impressive 4-1 win over the United States in the last round highlighted their attacking threat under coach Rudi Garcia.

Spain have relied on their trademark possession-based style, the same approach that guided them to their only World Cup title in 2010. But they will need greater attacking output against a disciplined Belgian side.

Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal remains Spain’s biggest attacking threat, although the 19-year-old has struggled to make a major impact after returning from injury. He has scored once in five matches.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente admitted the winger has not yet reached his best form.

“We know that the best version of him, the attacking Lamine, is something that we haven’t quite seen yet in this World Cup. Not to the level that we’re used to,” he said.

With Yamal yet to find his rhythm, Mikel Oyarzabal has stepped up, scoring four goals in the tournament, including two in Spain’s 3-0 win over Austria.

Spain’s defensive strength has also been crucial, with opponents managing only six shots on target across their five matches.
