Six Killed, 19 Injured in Fatal Crash on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

A Toyota bus carrying 25 passengers somersaulted after a tyre burst near Itori, Ogun State.

Six people lost their lives while 19 others sustained serious injuries in a lone accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State on Friday.

The crash happened around 10:47 a.m. near Osuponri village, close to the ICT Polytechnic in Itori. A grey Toyota bus with registration number KJA 851 YH was involved in the accident.

According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the bus was carrying 25 passengers when one of its tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted several times before coming to a halt.

TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed that the victims included seven male adults, 11 female adults, two male children, and five female children. He explained that six people—two men, two women, a boy, and a girl—died on the spot. The driver of the bus was among those who did not survive, while the motor boy sustained injuries.

Nineteen other passengers were rushed to the General Hospital in Ifo for urgent medical attention. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

Officials of TRACE, alongside personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), carried out the rescue operation. Authorities have since cautioned motorists to ensure proper tyre maintenance and adhere to road safety guidelines to prevent avoidable tragedies.
