Russia fires hundreds of drones at Ukraine, defying Trump warning
Russia launched a wave of attacks on Ukraine between late Tuesday and early Wednesday, firing hundreds of drones, artillery shells, and a ballistic missile, according to Ukrainian officials. The assault came in defiance of mounting international pressure including recent calls by former U.S. President Donald Trump for a peace agreement.
The attacks killed one woman and injured over two dozen people across several regions. A missile strike on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih knocked out power and water supplies, local authorities reported.
The escalation follows Trump’s Monday ultimatum, in which he threatened severe sanctions against Russia unless a peace deal was reached within 50 days to end the war, now in its third year. Despite the Kremlin’s stated openness to renewed talks, no new meetings have been scheduled since the last round of direct negotiations more than a month ago.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched at least 400 drones during the overnight assault, along with an Iskander ballistic missile fired from the occupied Crimean peninsula.
In the central city of Vinnytsia, drone strikes left eight people wounded, while three others were injured in Kharkiv, a northeastern city near the Russian border. In Kryvyi Rih, at least 15 people were injured, an industrial facility was destroyed, and public utilities were severely disrupted.
Russia has intensified its military campaign in recent weeks, as ceasefire efforts led by the United States remain stalled. On the battlefield, Russian forces have made gains while continuing to bombard Ukrainian territory with coordinated drone, artillery, and missile attacks.
Trump, speaking on Monday, said he had reached an agreement with NATO leaders to bolster Ukraine’s defenses by supplying more U.S. air defense systems and weaponry, expressing frustration over Russia’s refusal to commit to a ceasefire.
