The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has commenced a high-level strategic retreat in Kano State to harmonise reports and advance the review of remuneration packages for political, public, and judicial office holders across Nigeria.
Declaring the retreat open, RMAFC Chairman and Federal Commissioner representing Gombe State, Mohammed Usman, underscored the significance of the exercise, describing it as a crucial step toward strengthening governance, promoting equity, and aligning compensation structures with Nigeria’s current socio-economic realities.
Usman reminded participants that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) mandates the Commission to determine appropriate remuneration for political, public, and judicial office holders at all levels.
He noted that preliminary steps had already been taken, including public hearings, ministerial submissions, and the consideration of memoranda from stakeholders, all enriched with comparative insights from international best practices.
“This review is not just about numbers. It is about sustainability, fairness, and affordability. The Commission has carefully analysed government’s capacity to implement these packages, ensuring our recommendations remain realistic and enduring,” Usman stated.
He further explained that the retreat would consolidate earlier reports and addendums into a single, comprehensive framework that provides clarity and consistency in implementation.
The RMAFC Chairman urged members to bring their expertise and diverse perspectives to the table, stressing that the exercise must deliver a balanced outcome that serves both governance and the Nigerian people.
The Kano retreat is expected to lay the foundation for a sustainable remuneration framework that not only upholds constitutional mandates but also reflects prevailing economic conditions while safeguarding the stability and growth of Nigeria’s governance structure.
