Rescue Operation Underway As 18 Remain Missing In Cyprus Ferry Disaster
Rescue teams are continuing an intensive search off the coast of northern Cyprus for 18 people still missing after a passenger ferry capsized and sank on Sunday.
The Filo Jet was carrying 267 people, including 259 passengers and eight crew members, when it began taking on water shortly after leaving Kyrenia for the Turkish port of Taşucu.
At least eight people have died, while 241 others have been rescued and brought ashore, with some taken to hospitals for treatment.
The ferry sank in deep waters as Turkish and Turkish Cypriot rescue teams intensified their efforts to locate the missing passengers.
Authorities have detained the captain and crew members as investigations continue into what caused the vessel to capsize.
