Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colon has died aged 33 following years of health complications stemming from injuries sustained during his professional career.
The World Boxing Organization confirmed his death in a post on X on Thursday, paying tribute to the former unbeaten prospect.
“A warrior until the very end,” WBO said.
“The WBO family mourns the passing of Prichard Colón, whose courage, strength, and fighting spirit transcended the ring. Rest in peace, champion.”
Colon suffered severe and life-altering injuries during his 2015 bout against Terrel Williams, after sustaining repeated blows to the back of his head.
The injuries left him in a persistent vegetative state, ending a promising career in which he had remained unbeaten through 16 fights before facing Williams in October 2015.
