President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday for a two-nation trip to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced on Wednesday.
The President’s first destination will be Japan, where he will attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20 to 22.
The conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” aims to promote Africa’s economic transformation, enhance business environments through private investment and innovation, and foster a resilient, sustainable society grounded in human security, peace, and stability.
Beyond participating in plenary sessions, Tinubu will hold bilateral meetings and engage with chief executives of Japanese companies investing in Nigeria.
TICAD, launched in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the UN, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, takes place every three years, alternating between Japan and Africa. The previous edition was held in Tunisia in August 2022.
Following his engagement in Japan, Tinubu will travel to Brasília, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from Sunday, August 24, to Monday, August 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
While in Brazil, he will hold bilateral talks with President Lula and attend a business forum with Brazilian investors.
The President’s delegation, which includes key ministers and senior officials, will seek opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation and sign agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Brazilian government.
