President Tinubu Opens APC Doors to Opposition Members Amidst Political Turmoil

In a candid address to a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, President Bola Tinubu declared that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would not close its doors to members of opposition parties seeking to join.

He emphasized that the APC’s commitment to democratic principles necessitates inclusivity and tolerance, welcoming individuals from diverse political backgrounds.

Addressing the current state of opposition parties, President Tinubu remarked, “Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist.”

He further stated, “For me, I will not say, ‘Try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you to do so either.’ It is indeed a pleasure to witness you in such disarray.”

Despite these remarks, the President clarified that a one-party state is not forthcoming. He asserted, “A one-party state is not in the offing, nor should it ever be. That said, we would be guilty of political malpractice if we closed the door on those from other parties who now seek to join the APC.”

He welcomed new members from Delta and Akwa Ibom states, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Pastor Umo Eno, alongside other members of the National Assembly.

In his address, President Tinubu underscored the importance of political diversity, stating, “We must welcome and accept the diversity and number of political parties just as we welcome and embrace the diversity of our population. Our efforts must never be to eliminate political competition but to make that competition salutary to the national well-being by working across the political aisle whenever possible.”

This statement reflects the APC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its political base and foster a more inclusive political environment, even as opposition parties grapple with internal challenges.
