Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has dismissed reports claiming he promised to fix Nigeria’s national grid within three months. In a statement on Thursday, his spokesperson Adeola Adelabu described the reports as misleading and inaccurate, adding that Tegbe made no such commitment during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.
He explained that timelines for reforms in the power sector are still being developed based on technical assessments and consultations with stakeholders. The statement added that reforms around sector credibility, gas supply, metering, and operational efficiency could take up to one year to show meaningful progress.
Tegbe said initial efforts to stabilise the national grid would begin within his first 100 days, while broader structural reforms would take longer.
“My promise to this chamber and to Nigeria is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector”, he was quoted as saying during the screening. He also pledged to stabilise the grid, modernise electricity infrastructure, strengthen commercial frameworks, and enforce accountability across the value chain.
On electricity tariff reforms, he assured lawmakers that vulnerable households would be protected, while government works to balance affordability, sustainability, investor confidence, and efficiency.
The statement added that Tegbe remains open to media engagement and urged journalists to verify information to avoid misinformation.
