Peter Obi Clarifies Stance on Coalition, Says Fight Is Against Poverty, Not President Tinubu

The former Labour Party presidential candidate dismisses reports of political rivalry or a 2027 alliance with Atiku, insisting his focus remains on tackling bad governance and social issues.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed reports suggesting he is in political conflict with President Bola Tinubu or plotting an alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during a recent engagement with teachers in Abuja, Obi clarified that he is not aligned with any political coalition aimed at gaining power but is instead committed to fighting social injustices and governance failures.

“President Tinubu and I are not fighting. I am not fighting anybody,” Obi stated. “My fight is against bad governance, hunger, out-of-school children, poor healthcare access, and poverty.”

His comments follow widespread speculation that he would be Atiku’s running mate in 2027—a claim he flatly denied. According to Obi, his coalition is against systemic problems, not individuals or political opponents.

“These teachers should be paid by the government as part of the Universal Basic Education scheme. The law mandates free education for children. That’s the issue—not politics,” he said.

He further stressed that his political ideology prioritizes public service and social impact over positions of power. “Politics, for me, is not about position; it’s about doing the right thing,” Obi emphasized.

The former presidential hopeful also recently met President Tinubu in Rome during the installation ceremony of Pope Leo XIV. Obi has since advised against politicizing the meeting, noting that it was coincidental and unrelated to Nigerian politics.
