The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticised Governor Douye Diri for dismissing some of his political appointees who participated in a recent mega rally organised by the NEW Associates — a group loyal to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike — in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement signed by Derri Wright, publicity secretary of the PDP caretaker committee in the state, the party described the governor’s action as “an alarming demonstration of intolerance and high-handedness” that contradicts the core principles of democracy.
“We strongly condemn the sacking of these political appointees, who identified with the NEW Associates political group and participated in the mega rally held in solidarity with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike,” the statement read.
The PDP noted that the affected appointees are loyal members of the party who contributed significantly to Diri’s re-election during the last governorship poll. The party warned that their dismissal could deepen internal divisions and weaken the PDP’s unity ahead of future electoral contests.
“The PDP is deeply concerned about the level of intolerance and abuse of public power exhibited by Governor Diri. It is important to note that neither the government of Bayelsa State nor the treasury of the state belongs personally to Governor Diri,” the statement added.
According to the party, the dismissals were unjustified, especially as the sacked aides were committed to the party’s ideals and worked to promote inclusivity and civic engagement.
“This action sends a chilling message to political office holders and citizens alike, discouraging them from associating with movements that promote positive change and political accountability,” the PDP said.
The party called on Diri to reverse the decision and promote an environment of respect, tolerance, and internal dialogue.
“Our leaders must foster an environment where diverse opinions and grassroots movements are welcomed rather than stifled. Democracy thrives on debate, collaboration, and unity — not on division and fear,” the statement concluded.
As political tensions simmer, the Bayelsa PDP has urged all stakeholders and citizens to unite in defending a more inclusive and democratic culture in the state and across Nigeria.
