PDP Meets INEC Leadership Behind Closed Doors Amid Tensions Over National Secretary, NEC Meeting

Top PDP figures seek clarity on party leadership status and commission’s stance on upcoming NEC gathering

Amid mounting internal tensions, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday held a high-level closed-door meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at its headquarters in Abuja to seek clarity on issues affecting the party’s leadership and upcoming events.

Leading the PDP delegation was Acting National Chairman Umar Damagun, accompanied by influential party figures including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, serving senators Seriake Dickson and Abba Moro, and four state governors: Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal Dare (Zamfara), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau).

Other party stalwarts in attendance included Senator Ben Obi, Ahmed Makarfi, and other members of the party’s national organs. Notably absent were Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, Udeh Okoye, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), raising questions about the depth of internal divisions.

Focus of the Meeting: National Secretary Status and NEC Scheduling
In his opening remarks, Damagun underscored the purpose of the meeting—to discuss the status of the party’s national secretary and secure INEC’s position on the planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for later this month.

“We’re here today because we have unresolved issues, particularly concerning the rightful holder of the National Secretary position,” Damagun said. “This has been subject to prolonged litigation, concluding with a Supreme Court ruling in which INEC was a party. We now seek your interpretation of that judgment.”

He also referenced a prior communication with INEC regarding a letter he signed on NEC matters, noting that the commission had issued a reply.

“This meeting gives us the chance to engage directly, openly, and transparently with the Commission,” he added.

INEC Chairman Reacts to PDP’s Inconsistencies
In response, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu acknowledged the significance of the meeting but expressed concern over the party’s conflicting stances on its internal leadership structure.

“We have noted inconsistencies in the PDP’s communication with the Commission, particularly regarding the national secretaryship,” Yakubu said. “This is an important matter that will be thoroughly discussed here today.”

Yakubu stressed INEC’s commitment to neutrality and due process, adding that clarity on internal party arrangements is crucial for the Commission to fulfill its mandate effectively.

What’s at Stake
The outcome of this meeting could have wide-reaching implications for the PDP as it prepares for its NEC meeting—an event critical to setting the party’s strategic direction ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

The ongoing dispute over the party’s National Secretary position has exposed internal rifts and raised concerns about unity and leadership stability within Nigeria’s main opposition party.

As political observers watch closely, the PDP’s ability to navigate its internal crises and maintain a coherent front remains a pressing challenge in a critical political year.
