The headquarters of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) has issued a stern warning to local vigilante groups against conducting unauthorised security operations. This comes in the wake of a deadly ambush that claimed the lives of eight vigilantes, with several others still missing, in the Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The warning followed widespread media reports alleging that up to 70 vigilantes were killed in the attack. However, OPSH, in an official statement, dismissed the exaggerated figures and clarified the actual circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to OPSH, the vigilantes had mobilised from Kanam LGA on July 6, 2025, and embarked on a self-initiated security mission without notifying or coordinating with OPSH troops. On their way to the operation’s target area Odare Forest the group stopped at Kukawa community to reportedly finalise administrative plans.
The situation escalated in Kukawa, where the vigilantes allegedly clashed with residents, looted shops, and forcibly seized over 20 motorcycles from locals, claiming it was part of preparations for their mission.
Soon after leaving Kukawa, the group was ambushed near Odare Forest by suspected bandits. The attack resulted in the deaths of eight vigilantes, while several others remain unaccounted for. Troops from OPSH’s Sector 2, based in Wase, have since launched a search-and-rescue operation to locate the missing. The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and given proper burials.
In a statement issued by Major Samson Zhakom, Media Information Officer for OPSH, the task force cautioned all vigilante groups and individuals against taking unilateral security actions. He stressed that while OPSH appreciates community efforts to safeguard themselves, such initiatives must be coordinated with recognised security agencies to prevent unnecessary loss of life and maintain public order.
Major Zhakom reassured residents of Plateau State of OPSH’s unwavering commitment to restoring and maintaining peace across the region. He urged the public to support ongoing security efforts by providing credible intelligence and promptly reporting any suspicious activities.
OPSH concluded by warning that any individual or group who undermines public safety or violates operational protocols regardless of their intentions will be held accountable and face the full force of the law.
