Omah Lay Says He Has Stopped Trying to Quit Smoking

Afrobeats singer Omah Lay has revealed that he has stopped trying to quit smoking after several unsuccessful attempts.

The singer, whose real name is Omah Stanley Didia, made the disclosure during a recent podcast interview while discussing his relationship with the habit.

Omah Lay, known for songs such as Soso, said he had previously tried to stop smoking but eventually found that he could not maintain the decision.

He said he now accepts himself as a smoker rather than continuing to pressure himself to quit.

“I love smoking a lot. I tried to stop; I forced myself; I can’t,” the singer said.

Omah Lay went on to reflect on the brevity of life, saying his decision was influenced by his belief that everyone will eventually die.

He also spoke specifically about his use of marijuana, saying smoking weed gives him a sense of calm and what he described as “artificial happiness”.

The singer attributed part of that feeling to the fact that marijuana remains illegal in Nigeria, describing the illegality as adding an element of rebellion to the experience.

“I just want to be at peace and smoke my weed. And the fact that it is illegal in Nigeria gives me artificial happiness,” he said.

Omah Lay said he has chosen to focus on enjoying his life rather than continuing to struggle with attempts to stop the habit.

“This is it. This is my life. I will just live it. I will enjoy every single thing that I have,” he added.

His comments have drawn attention to his personal attitude towards smoking, particularly as the singer continues to maintain a prominent position in the Afrobeats scene.
