Olympic Champion Laura Dahlmeier Dies in Tragic Mountaineering Accident in Pakistan

In a tragic turn of events, Germany’s double Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has died following a mountaineering accident on Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, her management confirmed on Wednesday.

The accident occurred around noon on July 28, at an altitude of approximately 5,700 metres, when a sudden rockfall struck her during a climb in the Hushe Valley region of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Her partner, who remained unharmed, reported that Dahlmeier most likely died instantly. Recovery efforts were ultimately called off due to worsening weather and in accordance with her explicit written wishes that no one risk their life to retrieve her body.

Her relatives supported the decision, emphasizing her desire to remain on the mountain if such a tragedy occurred.

The 31-year-old was an accomplished mountaineer and had recently ascended the Great Trango Tower. Born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Dahlmeier was celebrated both for her athletic achievements and her dedication to mountain rescue and guiding after her early retirement from biathlon in 2019, at just 25.

Dahlmeier made history at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, becoming the first female biathlete to win both sprint and pursuit gold, along with a bronze in the individual race.

Tributes have poured in from across the sporting world. IOC President Kirsty Coventry called her “a legend who will be remembered forever.” Bavarian Premier Markus Söder honoured her as a “humble and grounded” ambassador for her homeland, and the German Olympic Sports Confederation praised her as “more than an Olympic champion – someone with heart, attitude, and vision.”
