Nigerian Senate Schedules Screening of Defence Minister Nominee Gen. Musa for Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025

Pursuant to Section 147 of the Constitution, the Nigerian Senate is set to begin the screening of General Christopher Musa on Wednesday as the nominated Defence Minister.

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, confirmed the schedule in a statement on Tuesday, emphasizing the significance of the exercise for strengthening the country’s security apparatus.

“The President has formally requested the Senate to screen his Defence Minister nominee. The letter will be read on the Senate floor, and proceedings will follow immediately”, Bamidele said.

Musa’s nomination follows the resignation of former Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru, who cited health reasons for stepping down. President Bola Tinubu transmitted Musa’s nomination to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday.

Bamidele highlighted the urgency of the screening, noting that Nigeria faces ongoing threats from terrorists, bandits, and other security challenges. “This process ensures that the Ministry of Defence has capable leadership at a critical moment. Lawmakers will engage with the nominee to understand his strategies for reinforcing national security,” he said.

He added that the session also serves as a demonstration of coordination between the Presidency and National Assembly in addressing security priorities. “The Senate’s review of General Musa will provide Nigerians with confidence that the defence sector is equipped to protect the nation effectively”, Bamidele concluded.
