In a poignant message marking this year’s June 12 Democracy Day, Niger State Governor Umaru Bago expressed deep concern that Nigeria, despite over two decades of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, remains short of its true potential.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago called on Nigerian leaders to intensify efforts towards steering the nation toward sustainable economic growth and social progress.
He emphasized the urgent need for ongoing electoral reforms, enhanced civic engagement, and the fortification of democratic institutions tasked with protecting vulnerable populations, delivering justice, and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens. “Strengthening these pillars is essential to advancing democracy and fostering national development,” he remarked.
Governor Bago urged Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to reflect sincerely on the country’s achievements, renew their commitment to democratic principles, and actively participate in the democratic process.
He described June 12 as a powerful symbol of the triumph of the people’s collective will over authoritarianism—a day that honors the sacrifices, aspirations, and resilience of Nigeria’s democracy pioneers.
Highlighting the positive strides democracy has brought, Bago pointed to increased transparency and accountability in governance, vibrant political competition, diverse political expression, and a growing culture of civic participation as milestones worth celebrating.
Reaffirming his dedication to the people of Niger State, Governor Bago assured citizens that his administration remains focused on delivering tangible dividends of democracy through responsible, inclusive leadership aligned with his transformative “New Niger” agenda.
He appealed for continued prayers, support, and understanding from the populace as the government works toward building a more secure, prosperous, and transformed Niger State. “I urge everyone to pray for leaders at all levels to pursue purposeful leadership. I remain fully committed to the New Niger project and the promise it holds for our people,” he concluded
