Nasarawa State Government Demands 2026 League Double from United and Amazons

The Nasarawa State Government has issued a high-stakes mandate to its premier football clubs, Nasarawa United and Nasarawa Amazons, to sweep the domestic league titles for the 2025/26 season. Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, articulated this ambitious vision on Friday, February 20, 2026, challenging both teams to deliver the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) trophies to the state capital.

Nasarawa United currently occupies the third position in the NPFL standings with 44 points from 27 matches, trailing league leaders Ikorodu City by just one point. Meanwhile, the Nasarawa Amazons hold the second spot in the NWFL Group B, amassing 15 points from eight games as they push for a place in the season-ending Super Six playoffs. Yakubu believes the infrastructure, coaching expertise, and depth of talent within both camps provide the necessary foundation for a historic double-triumph.

We remain committed to seeing our teams, both Nasarawa United and Nasarawa Amazons Football Clubs, play on the continent, not just to win the domestic league titles,” Kwanta told Nasarawa United’s media team. “We are working day and night with a view to seeing that this ambition is achieved. We have talented players, committed coaches, and passionate fans, the ingredients for success are all there.”

The commissioner’s directive comes at a pivotal moment in the season. Nasarawa United recently bounced back from a narrow defeat to Katsina United by securing a crucial draw against Bendel Insurance, keeping them firmly in the title race alongside Enugu Rangers and Rivers United. On the women’s side, the Amazons recently suffered their first defeat of the season against Sunshine Queens in Akure, but they remain top contenders for continental qualification through the CAF Women’s Champions League.

By targeting a “double-crown” victory, the state government aims to elevate Nasarawa’s profile as a premier sporting hub in West Africa. The ministry has pledged continued logistical and financial support to ensure the players maintain peak performance levels during the final stretch of the campaign. Supporters across Lafia now anticipate a dramatic conclusion to the season as both clubs strive to translate this governmental confidence into silverware.
