MI Abaga Reflects on How 2008 Headies Win Launched His Music Career

Award-winning rapper MI Abaga has described his 2008 Headies Award win as a defining moment that propelled him to stardom.
Speaking about the experience, Abaga recalled the challenges he faced on the red carpet before receiving the ‘Best Rap Single’ award. He shared that people initially overlooked him, asking him to move aside for actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s photo shoot.
“I had been grinding for years, and no one knew who I was. Then in February 2008, I was announced as the winner for ‘Best Rap Single,’ and my life literally changed that day,” he said.
Abaga recounted walking with his manager as Omotola arrived with her security, causing them to be repeatedly asked to move. “The people on the red carpet didn’t even know I was nominated, so we had to keep shifting corners while she took photos,” he added.
The award marked the start of a successful run, leading to hits such as Safe, Talk About It, and Incredible Music, solidifying his place in Nigeria’s music industry. “Two hours later, I had an award in my hand from Ayo Animashaun, and from that moment, everyone knew MI was in the game,” he recalled.
