Nollywood actress Mary Remmy Njoku has weighed in on the challenges that can arise when a woman out-earns her husband, saying ego and insecurity can sometimes turn a partner’s success into a source of tension.
Njoku shared her thoughts in an Instagram post while discussing how couples may respond when the financial balance in a marriage shifts in favour of the woman.
According to the actress, women often celebrate their husbands’ financial and career successes because they view such achievements as beneficial to the entire family.
She, however, said some men may react differently when their wives become the higher earners.
Njoku noted that a woman’s increased income can make some men feel “emasculated, inadequate, or disrespected”, even when the woman has done nothing to create such feelings.
She also pointed to the possibility of financial differences becoming a recurring explanation for disagreements between couples.
According to her, minor disputes may suddenly be attributed to the woman’s greater earning power, even when there has been no change in her conduct.
The actress argued that such reactions may reflect a man’s personal insecurity about his wife’s success rather than any deliberate attempt by the woman to undermine him.
Njoku maintained that a woman achieving greater financial success should not make her husband feel inferior.
She also said a man who genuinely loves his partner should be able to celebrate her accomplishments rather than view them as a competition.
Concluding her post with a blend of humour and criticism, Njoku wrote: “But their Ego no go gree.”
Her comments have added to an ongoing conversation about gender expectations, financial roles and emotional security within modern relationships.
