Lateef Adedimeji Says Emotional Roles Helped Him Build His Nollywood Identity

Actor and filmmaker Lateef Adedimeji has revealed that his trademark emotional performances were part of a deliberate plan to establish himself in Nollywood.
Speaking during an interview on The Morayo Show, the actor said he entered the film industry knowing he needed a distinctive style that would make audiences remember him amid stiff competition.
Adedimeji explained that he was initially identified by many as someone who resembled a senior colleague. Although he viewed the comparison as a compliment, he wanted to develop a reputation based on his own strengths rather than his likeness to another actor.
To achieve that goal, he said he carefully studied the industry to identify areas that were often overlooked by other performers.
The actor decided to make emotional scenes his signature, explaining that he gave special attention to moments that required him to cry, even if they lasted only a few seconds.
According to him, the strategy eventually paid off as viewers began referring to him as the “crying machine,” making him instantly recognisable before many even knew his name.
Adedimeji said the nickname reassured him that he had succeeded in creating a unique identity, as audiences were now associating him with a distinctive aspect of his craft instead of comparing him with another actor.
He also stressed that versatility is essential for anyone hoping to enjoy a long and successful career in the entertainment industry, noting that performers should continuously develop different skills to remain relevant.
