Following the Lagos State Government’s announcement of measures to address recent delays in waste collection across the state, including the deployment of 160 new waste compactors, the government is stepping up efforts to strengthen waste management infrastructure and improve service delivery.
The measures followed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s inspection of waste management operations at the Olusosun dumpsite, where he acknowledged growing concerns over waste accumulation in parts of Lagos and described the situation as unacceptable.
As part of the broader response, the state is developing new Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous 3 to improve the movement of waste from collection points to recovery and disposal facilities.
Material Recovery Facilities are also planned to enhance waste sorting, recycling and resource recovery.
To improve immediate operations at Olusosun, the government is increasing the number of tipping platforms beyond the existing two to reduce truck turnaround time and ease pressure at the dumpsite.
The state is also working to have four active dumpsites operating within the next six weeks, providing additional disposal capacity and reducing dependence on individual locations.
Additional compactor trucks have been ordered to strengthen the waste collection fleet, while more funding will be provided for road stabilisation, equipment and other operational needs required to improve disposal activities.
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has also been directed to strengthen its workforce, with additional personnel to be deployed across streets, roads and dumpsites to improve collection and disposal operations.
The government says the intervention combines immediate operational measures with long-term infrastructure investment aimed at creating a more efficient, sustainable and resilient waste management system.
The broader objective is to improve waste collection, expand disposal capacity, strengthen recycling and recovery, and ultimately deliver a cleaner and healthier environment for Lagos residents.
