The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially scheduled the state’s local government elections for July 12, 2025, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated grassroots political contests in recent years.
Announcing the date on Friday, LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Tope Ojo, confirmed that voters will elect 57 council chairmen and 376 councillors across Lagos’ 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
To accommodate any rerun that may arise in disputed or inconclusive areas, LASIEC has earmarked July 19 for supplementary elections.
The commission’s announcement comes as the tenure of the current local council officials draws to a close, prompting urgent preparations to avoid a governance vacuum at the third tier of government.
“The commission has released the official Notice of Election, marking the beginning of electoral activities. Political parties are now expected to visit LASIEC headquarters to obtain nomination forms for their candidates,” Ojo said.
Electoral Timetable and Stakeholder Engagement
A stakeholders’ meeting with all registered political parties has been scheduled for Tuesday, where the commission will outline expectations and key electoral procedures. The full Election Guidelines will be published on April 17, detailing nomination deadlines, campaign regulations, and voting protocols.
Campaigns and political rallies will be officially permitted from April 18 to July 9, giving political parties nearly three months to canvass for votes and showcase their platforms.
According to LASIEC’s timeline, nominations—both for sole candidates and substitutions—must be completed between June 18 and June 25.
Commitment to Free and Fair Elections
LASIEC Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (rtd), reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to delivering a credible, transparent, and inclusive election, promising a level playing field for all parties.
“We are committed to strengthening grassroots democracy through a credible electoral process. The integrity of this election is paramount,” she said, urging political parties, civil society groups, and security agencies to support peaceful and orderly conduct.
Significance for Lagos and National Politics
The Sanwo-Olu administration has consistently emphasized the importance of local governance in advancing development in Lagos. With over 90% of public services and community initiatives channeled through local councils, credible leadership at that level is widely regarded as critical to the state’s progress.
Political analysts say the 2025 council polls will be a litmus test for Lagos’ political structure, offering a glimpse into potential realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
