Two new general hospitals in Ojo and Somolu are expected to expand Lagos’ healthcare capacity and bring specialised medical services closer to residents.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed this during an inspection of the two projects, saying the 280-bed Ojo General Hospital is about 85 per cent complete and could be commissioned by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
Medical equipment and furniture have already been ordered for the facility, while final construction works are being monitored to ensure it meets required standards.
In Somolu, a new seven-storey, 180-bed general hospital is about 15 per cent complete and is expected to be ready by the third quarter of 2027.
Abayomi said the project became necessary because the existing 60-bed facility can no longer cope with demand. About 107,000 patients are registered there, while its wider catchment area is estimated at between five and 10 million residents.
The new hospital will also serve as Lagos’ Head and Neck Super-Specialty Centre, offering Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Dentistry, alongside Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The commissioner said the projects are part of efforts to develop specialised services across Lagos’ general hospitals and reduce the number of residents travelling outside the state or country for advanced treatment.
Both facilities will feature solar power, water harvesting, improved sewage systems, low-carbon technology and enhanced infection-control measures.
The state government said the projects will complement healthcare financing reforms, including compulsory health insurance, as it works to strengthen healthcare delivery and position Lagos as a regional centre for specialised medical treatment.
