Lagos Communities Advised to Champion Ownership of Primary Health Centres

The Lagos State Advocacy Team on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (ATM) has called on residents of Epe and Ejirin Local Government Areas to take greater ownership of their Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) instead of relying solely on government intervention.

This appeal was made during an advocacy visit led by the Lagos State Coordinator of the TB Network and Team Lead for Advocacy, Communication, and Social Mobilisation (ACSM), Meg Aipoh, under the ATM coordinators.

Speaking during the visit, Aipoh stressed the need for community participation in managing PHCs to ensure sustainability, accountability, and improved service delivery. She noted that the project currently operates in five Local Government Areas of Lagos State, with three community-based organisations (CBOs) assigned to each LGA to drive grassroots engagement and impact.

“Communities must take responsibility for their healthcare facilities. Ownership encourages sustainability, ensures better services, and strengthens the overall health system,” Aipoh said.

The ATM initiative is driven by three civil society coalitions, the Civil Society in Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN), the Tuberculosis (TB) Network, and the Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN).

Supported by the Global Fund, the project is being implemented in 21 states, including Lagos, with the aim of strengthening health systems and improving Nigeria’s response to HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
