The Labour Party (LP) took a decisive step toward internal restructuring on Thursday as it held its statutory National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, led by Senator Nenadi Usman.
Among the prominent figures at the gathering were Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, his deputy Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and other key stakeholders across the party’s leadership ranks. Their presence underscored the significance of the meeting for the future of the party.
At the top of the agenda was the formal inauguration of an interim National Working Committee (NWC). This temporary leadership body will oversee the affairs of the party until a national convention is held to elect a new executive.
The NEC also resolved to establish strategic committees, including a membership re-validation committee to audit and verify LP members across Nigeria. Another major resolution was the formation of a congresses committee that will coordinate party congresses at various levels in preparation for upcoming political engagements.
Sources within the party say the Abuja meeting represents a key milestone in LP’s repositioning strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections. The gathering is seen as part of broader efforts to consolidate internal unity and redefine the party’s grassroots structures.
Also in attendance was the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, reinforcing the labour movement’s continued influence within the party’s leadership framework.
The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party was represented by a delegate on behalf of its Chairman, Chief Sylvester Ejiofor.
As the LP works to solidify its base and strengthen its national presence, Thursday’s NEC meeting marks the beginning of what insiders describe as a “rebuilding phase” that will shape the party’s direction for years to come.
