The Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, says it has foiled an attempt to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, MSCC, Kurmawa, in Kano.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, explaining that the incident occurred on Sunday around noon when a 40-year-old man allegedly attempted to throw a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the facility.
He said officers of the Armed Squad Unit, acting on their vigilance and swift response, apprehended the suspect, identified as a resident of January Quarters, Kano. The operation was carried out under the supervision of the unit’s commander, CSC Usman M. Sale.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the officers for their professionalism, alertness and commitment to safeguarding custodial facilities.
Yusuf-Lakpene reaffirmed the Command’s zero-tolerance policy towards the introduction of prohibited items into correctional centres, warning members of the public against attempts to smuggle illicit substances and other restricted materials into the facilities.
He added that the suspect had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for further investigation and necessary action.
The Controller also reiterated the Command’s commitment to strengthening security across its custodial centres to maintain a safe environment for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
