United States and Nigerian forces have carried out a joint operation that resulted in the killing of a senior Islamic State commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, President Donald Trump has announced.
Trump disclosed the development in a post on Truth Social, describing the operation as “flawlessly executed” and “meticulously planned”, and saying it targeted what he called “the most active terrorist in the world”.
He said al-Minuki, believed to be the second-in-command of ISIS globally, was killed during the coordinated mission involving American and Nigerian forces.
According to Trump, the operation eliminated a key figure involved in planning attacks and coordinating extremist activities across regions.
“He will no longer terrorize the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans,” he wrote.
Trump added that the mission was conducted under his direction and praised the professionalism of the forces involved.
The latest operation follows previous counterterrorism actions targeting Islamic State-linked fighters in parts of West Africa.
