The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has firmly dismissed recent remarks by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, suggesting that negotiations are underway for the release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. IPOB described the minister’s claims as “reckless, false, and contemptuous.”
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group condemned what it called “laughable propaganda” and “insulting narratives” implying that Kanu is seeking a conditional release from the Nigerian government.
“There is no negotiation whatsoever that involves Mazi Nnamdi Kanu accepting any so-called ‘conditions’ from the Nigerian government. None. Absolutely none,” the statement read.
IPOB insisted that Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021 following his “extraordinary rendition” from Kenya, is not seeking compromise or rehabilitation. Instead, he remains steadfast in his demand for a United Nations-supervised referendum on Biafra’s independence.
The group highlighted what it described as Kanu’s harsh treatment in custody years in solitary confinement, the loss of his parents, and ongoing legal struggles it labelled “judicial terrorism” asserting that such a man would never beg for release under humiliating conditions.
IPOB also took aim at Simon Ekpa, discrediting his claim to lead a so-called “Biafran government in exile,” noting that he had recently retracted this position in a Finnish court, admitting instead to being merely a content creator.
The group cautioned Umahi and other government officials against spreading what it called “false hopes,” reiterating that the only acceptable resolution to the Biafran agitation remains a UN-supervised referendum.
