The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Anambra State by three days, shifting the deadline from July 17 to July 20, 2025.
The extension was announced on Thursday by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee Sam Olumekun, following a meeting held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to Olumekun, the decision was made in response to widespread appeals from citizens and stakeholders who requested additional time to complete their registration ahead of the November 8 governorship election in the state.
“The Commission is pleased with the turnout of registrants in Anambra and the peaceful conduct of the exercise in all 326 registration centres,” he stated.
Over 96,000 New Registrants in 9 Days
As of Wednesday, July 16, INEC had recorded 96,085 new registrants in Anambra within just nine days of the exercise averaging over 10,600 registrations per day.
The commission also recorded:
- 12,595 requests for voter transfers, both within and outside the state.
- 7,061 applications for PVC updates or replacements due to loss or damage.
Youth and Women Lead Participation
Preliminary demographic data shows:
- 58% (56,017) of the new registrants are female.
- 52.48% (50,429) are youths aged 18–34.
INEC noted that this strong turnout by women and young people reflects growing civic engagement among key voter blocs.
What Happens After Registration Ends
Once registration closes on Sunday, July 20, INEC will:
- Display the preliminary voter register for public claims and objections, as required by the Electoral Act.
- Clean up the data using its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to eliminate duplicate or fraudulent entries.
- Publish a final breakdown of registered voters by age, gender, occupation, and disability status.
More Political Parties Eye Registration
Olumekun also revealed that INEC has received five new applications from groups seeking to be registered as political parties, bringing the total number of pending applications to 134.
Details of these applications including proposed names, acronyms, logos, and interim leadership are available on the INEC website and social media channels for public scrutiny.
“The Commission remains committed to transparency, inclusivity, and timely dissemination of information as we approach the Anambra governorship election,” Olumekun concluded.
