Iheanacho adopts ‘Agabey’ nickname after historic scoring run in Turkey

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho has celebrated his record-breaking form in Turkey by sharing a photo of himself in traditional Turkish attire and embracing the nickname “Agabey”.

The forward posted the image on Instagram after scoring twice and assisting another goal in Bursaspor’s 3-0 victory over Muglaspor in the Turkish 1. Lig on Thursday. He captioned it, “We go ball till eternity, Kelechi Agabey.”

“Agabey” is a Turkish term of respect meaning “Big Brother” or “Boss”.

The 30-year-old has scored in 10 consecutive league appearances, becoming the first player to achieve the feat in Turkish professional league football. His goal against the Super Eagles also extends his scoring streak to 11 successive matches, taking his tally since joining from Celtic to 14 goals and three assists.

Iheanacho initially thought he had scored in the 51st minute, but VAR ruled out the effort for offside. He opened the scoring seven minutes later, netted again in the 79th minute and assisted substitute Hüseyin Maldar four minutes afterwards.

The result moved Bursaspor to second place with 22 points, two ahead of third-placed Iğdır FK and three behind leaders Kayserispor. The position currently secures an automatic promotion spot to the Turkish Super Lig.

Bursaspor will host Pendikspor on Monday.
