“Having a Child Made Me Appreciate My Parents More” – Johnny Drille Reflects on Fatherhood and Family
Nigerian singer and songwriter Johnny Drille has shared how becoming a father has profoundly deepened his appreciation for his parents and transformed his outlook on life, love, and responsibility.
In a heartfelt interview with Dose of Society, the Mavin Records artist opened up about the emotional journey of fatherhood, revealing how it has reshaped his values and strengthened his commitment to family.
“The one rule I live by is family first,” Johnny said. “I would drop anything, anywhere in the world, if my family needed me. They’ve always been my foundation. Every time the world became too much, I would run back home—and somehow, everything felt better.”
The singer, who welcomed a daughter in November 2023, reflected on how becoming a parent gave him a new perspective on the quiet sacrifices his own parents made while raising him and his siblings.
“My parents didn’t have much. There were times we had no food, but they always found a way. They made it work—and made it fun. As kids, we didn’t fully understand, but looking back now, I see how much they shielded us from.”
This deeper understanding, he says, has only grown stronger since stepping into parenthood himself.
“Having a child changes everything. It gives you a new lens to see the world—and your own childhood. Now that I’m a father, I realise what it truly means to nurture someone. I appreciate my parents so much more now for everything they did for us.”
Johnny Drille also spoke to the often-overlooked emotional growth that comes with parenting, especially in today’s complex world.
“I don’t think it’s talked about enough—just how much parenting can change you. I’m grateful that I had parents who nurtured me with love and resilience, especially in a world as chaotic as this. They gave me the tools to navigate life, and that’s a gift I want to pass on to my daughter.”
