Iran’s aviation sector is facing fresh pressure after the United Arab Emirates suspended flights operated by Iranian airlines, adding to a growing list of countries restricting Tehran’s access to international airspace.
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension of all flights operated by Iranian carriers to and from the country, citing new United States sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation industry.
The move is particularly significant for Tehran, as Dubai remains one of the busiest international destinations for Iranian travellers and a major hub for trade and business between the two countries.
An Iran Airtour flight from Tehran to Dubai was reportedly cancelled shortly before departure on Thursday, despite passengers having already been issued tickets.
The UAE’s decision follows similar restrictions by Oman, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkmenistan, as governments respond to the latest round of American sanctions against Iranian airlines.
The measures come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the United States seeking to further isolate Iran’s aviation network and limit the country’s access to international transportation and financial systems.
Earlier this month, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on 27 Iranian airlines and dozens of companies accused of supporting the country’s aviation sector.
Washington has warned that airports and businesses continuing to provide services to sanctioned Iranian carriers could face consequences, including restrictions on access to the US dollar-based financial system.
The pressure has also extended into Iran’s banking sector.
The UAE’s central bank recently blocked transactions involving Iran’s Bank Melli, citing alleged breaches of regulations relating to money laundering, terrorism financing and arms proliferation.
Iranian authorities, however, are seeking to reverse the aviation restrictions through diplomatic engagement.
Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization says talks are already underway with affected countries, including the UAE, in an effort to restore suspended flights.
Turkmenistan has also reportedly denied access to a Tehran-Dushanbe flight, further highlighting the growing difficulties facing Iranian airlines as international restrictions tighten around the country’s aviation sector.
