The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away over the weekend in London after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, noting that the holiday aligns with the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The day is set aside to allow Nigerians reflect on the life and legacy of Buhari—a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s political history—who served both as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a democratically elected president for two terms (2015–2023).
“The Federal Government urges all citizens to observe the holiday with solemnity, national unity, and respect for the memory of a leader who left an indelible mark on the nation’s governance and political evolution,” the statement read.
President Buhari, 82, was receiving treatment abroad when he passed. His death has drawn tributes from across the political spectrum and the international community.
