FG Approves New Pensionable Salary Structure for Armed Forces

The Federal Government has approved a new pensionable salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with the highest-ranking military officers set to earn up to 29.75 million naira annually for pension purposes.

The new structure, approved by President Bola Tinubu, takes effect from September 1, 2026, and applies to personnel of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force.

The approval was conveyed in a circular issued on September 3 by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and signed by its Chairman, Major General Junaidu S. Bindawa, retired.

The circular outlines revised gross annual salary figures across military ranks and salary steps, establishing a new basis for determining pension benefits for serving and retired personnel.

Under the approved structure, Generals, Admirals and Air Chief Marshals occupy the highest salary level, with a gross annual pensionable salary of 29.75 million naira.

The review was undertaken in accordance with the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and followed approval by the President in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

The commission has also released a detailed schedule showing the revised pensionable salaries for different ranks and salary levels across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

The new structure is expected to provide an updated framework for pension calculations and benefits for military personnel under the revised salary regime.
