FAAN Announces Temporary Closure of Runway 18R/36L at MMA for Rehabilitation

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for essential rehabilitation work.

The closure, set to take place on March 3 and 4, follows just two weeks after the runway’s reopening from an extensive 11-month maintenance shutdown.

In an official memo dated February 28, FAAN’s Head of Operations, J.U. Nwosu, explained that the closure was necessitated by safety concerns. Specifically, construction equipment located at the A2 Taxiway-link presents a potential hazard to aircraft landing or departing the airport. To ensure the safety of air traffic, the closure is vital to avoid any operational risks.

During this brief closure, all flight operations will be redirected to the shorter domestic Runway 18L/36R. While this runway remains operational, its limited capacity may cause delays for both domestic and international flights. Passengers are encouraged to check with airlines for any updates on potential schedule changes.

FAAN has reassured the public that its technical departments are fully prepared to maintain security, conduct thorough inspections, and implement 24-hour surveillance during the rehabilitation period, ensuring continued safety and smooth operations at the airport.

The temporary closure is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the highest safety standards and improve the infrastructure of the country’s busiest airport, reinforcing FAAN’s commitment to providing a safe and efficient travel experience for all passengers.
