EU Plans to Present U.S Tariffs Response ‘Early Next Week’

The European Commission is expected to unveil its response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest round of tariffs as early as next week, according to a statement made by EU trade spokesman Olof Gill on Tuesday.
“We expect the plan could be as early as next week,” Gill told reporters, adding that the Commission’s final strategy would be formulated in consultation with the 27 member states of the European Union.
This response comes after Trump’s recent announcement of new tariffs on European goods, which have sparked concern across the EU, particularly in industries such as automotive and agriculture. The tariffs are part of an ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and the EU, further intensifying transatlantic tensions.
EU leaders have previously warned of retaliation against U.S. goods if the tariffs go into effect. The Commission is weighing various countermeasures, including the potential imposition of tariffs on American products like motorcycles, jeans, and bourbon, as well as investigating the possibility of filing a dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In the meantime, European industries are bracing for the impact of the proposed tariffs, with many businesses urging the EU to take swift action to safeguard their competitiveness in the global market. EU officials have expressed concerns that these trade restrictions could harm both European and U.S. economies, leading to higher prices for consumers and disrupting established supply chains.
As the situation evolves, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for a unified and firm response, emphasizing the importance of defending the EU’s economic interests while maintaining a dialogue with the U.S. in the hope of de-escalating tensions.
