Eric Dane has died at the age of 53 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disorder.
The actor passed away on Thursday afternoon, surrounded by his family, including his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia.
In a statement, the family thanked supporters for their messages and prayers, describing his children as the “center of his world.”
Dane gained widespread recognition for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy, where he became one of the show’s most popular characters. Years later, he earned renewed acclaim for portraying Cal Jacobs in Euphoria.
His acting career spanned more than three decades and included appearances in Charmed and The Last Ship. On the big screen, he featured in films such as Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day and Burlesque.
Colleagues across the industry have paid tribute to the late actor. Sam Levinson, creator of Euphoria, described him as both a talented performer and a valued friend. Meanwhile, Grey’s Anatomy co-star Kim Raver praised his lively spirit and strong comedic instincts.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually leading to muscle weakness, paralysis and difficulty breathing. Before his death, Dane had publicly raised awareness about the condition.
